Introduction
Lighting is the foundation of great photography. In this hands-on course, you’ll learn to see, shape and control light with intention.
Whether you’re photographing portraits, still life or street scenes, understanding light is essential. It allows you to create depth, emotion and visual impact.
You’ll explore the principles of natural light, creative flash and studio lighting. Furthermore, you’ll discover how different lighting techniques influence mood, texture and atmosphere.
As a result, you’ll develop the confidence to use light as a powerful creative tool.
Course Description & Expectations
The Essential Lighting Course develops your technical understanding and creative control of photographic lighting. Through practical training, you’ll explore natural light, available light, external flash and studio strobes.
First, you’ll learn how light behaves and how to recognise its different qualities. You’ll also explore lighting ratios, exposure control and the relationship between light and shadow.
Next, you’ll develop essential skills in creative flash photography. This includes understanding camera settings, flash techniques and the use of light modifiers. In addition, you’ll learn to interpret light meter readings and make precise exposure adjustments.
You’ll then progress to studio lighting, where you’ll discover how to shape and control light for portraits and still life. Meanwhile, practical exercises will strengthen your ability to direct subjects and achieve your intended lighting effects.
Finally, you’ll explore natural and available light photography. You’ll learn to recognise lighting opportunities and adapt to changing conditions without relying on artificial lighting.
The course combines four essential areas: lighting fundamentals, creative flash, studio lighting and natural light photography.
Throughout the programme, our training follows three stages: theory, practical application and review. Consequently, you’ll gain both technical proficiency and the creative confidence to approach different lighting situations.
