All our teachings are headed by our photography mentor ALAN LIM. Over the years he has taught many students locally and internationally, and mentored many photographers whom some going on to win awards.
As an International Award-Winning Photographer himself, Alan’s approach to teaching is fun, refreshing and inspiring. He is known to his students as a very engaging instructor with a deep passion for the craft of photography. The blend of his ability to distill very technical aspects into simple to grasp concepts and his generosity to share his decades of experience as a Professional Photographer makes his teaching both invaluable and effective.
A belief that nothing is impossible has made Alan Lim a photographer who can visualize a concept in a fresh and exciting way. Brimming with ideas, especially in the visual communication arts and photography, he sees a piece of white paper as a canvas for all possibilities.
Alan started in the commercial photography world after graduated with a degree in photography from the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, USA in 1995, and was soon attracted to the fast pace of the newsroom, he joined The Straits Times, Singapore’s main English-language broadsheet in 1997. During his time there, he produced countless images for cover pages, celebrity portraits, and documentary photos. His work has won him many local and international awards, including Lucie Awards- International Photographer of the Year, Nikon Photojournalism Awards and WAN-IFRA. Over the next 12 years, he became the paper’s most sought-after feature photographer and was promoted to senior Executive Photographer.
After leaving The Straits Times in 2009, as passionate as ever about photography and visual communication, after Alan left his high post in the paper, he set up Alan Lim Studio and Eleven Photography to continue doing what he does best, turning a piece of white paper as a canvas for all possibilities. In the same exciting year, one of Alan’s highest achievement in his career happened when he was awarded by Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong to conceptualize a series of his portrait. Just a few years before he was assigned to photograph the Prime Minister’s father, the late Lee Kuan Yew for his memoir.
In early 2010, Alan founded the School of Photography Singapore to share his experience and knowledge with all photography lovers. As a photographer mentor and educator, Alan’s goal is simple, to broaden photography culture and pass down his knowledge to anyone who embraces photography. By the end of 2012, the total enrollment to his courses has reached a total estimation of 2500 students from all over the world.
In 2014, Alan was appointed by the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore(IPOS) as the IP Creative Partner in Photography to broaden the awareness of copyright protection in photography.
In 2015, Alan was selected to produce three important books to celebrate Singapore 50 years since independence:
-
- Not Born in Singapore- NUS Law
- Design District Singapore- Alan’s Street Photography showcase
- From Clementi to Carnegie- Siow Lee Chin’s memoir
In early 2018, Alan was appointed by Brilliant Prints Singapore as their ambassador.
